Not every mini-split problem is worth fixing. These systems can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years with proper maintenance, and age is often the deciding factor. A useful benchmark: if the repair cost approaches 50% of the price of a comparable new system and the unit is more than 10 years old, mini-split replacement often delivers better long-term value.
A few other factors matter. Systems still running on R-22 refrigerant face real constraints now that R-22 has been phased out under federal regulations. Parts availability is shrinking, and refrigerant costs have risen, which can make repairs impractical. Older units rated at 13 or 14 SEER also compare poorly to modern units that routinely exceed 20 SEER, and efficiency gains can offset replacement cost over time. If your unit has needed multiple repairs in a short period, that pattern is worth paying attention to.
